I am a veterian and in any war someone lives and someone dies. Get in enough of them and you will sooner or later loose your fight to a younger stronger guy just as determined that his way of life is just a good as yours, or he may just be lucky enough to see you first.

As I see it, he's saying the point of war is not honor or martyrdom or even how many medals they pin to your chest, but to win. Period. That was, after all, Patton's philosophy of war: to advance constantly and never retreat. It was never intended to belittle anyone's sacrifice, whether it be for God, country, family or Betty Grable's pin-up photo.
By the way, Patton himself died after a car accident that occurred while he was in route to a bird hunt. How meaningless is that? He was also buried amongst his fallen soldiers in Belgium. I guess he didn't have much respect for the poor, dumb bastards.
And, oh yeah, you can fight in YOUR livingroom. Mine is strictly non-violent.
